Fighting for Our Future!
A true son of The Bronx, George Diaz, Jr. is a passionate activist and public servant. From the time he was an adolescent, George soaked in the world around him with an eye toward problem solving. In his neighborhood of Norwood, he has seen desperation on the streets with drugs, violence and mental illness. Being raised by a single mother, he also lived the everyday struggle of so many New Yorkers. Once even having to accompany her to Housing Court to stave off an eviction. He credits his mother's tenacity and commitment to providing him an educational foundation with his drive to learn from those struggles and work to advocate for others who are still having those experiences. In high school, George volunteered with God’s Love We Deliver to deliver meals to homebound.
After graduating from City College, George began his community service career at the office of former New York City Councilmember G. Oliver Koppell. Through his experiences from working at a hotel to put himself through college, George became familiar with the issues facing low-wage laborers in New York City. He knew that he wanted to use his education and career to give back to the community. His work in municipal government centered around issues related to transportation, paratransit and police matters. Some of his most memorable moments during his early career include aiding in the passage of the Living Wage Act, bridging the divide between the NYPD and local youths by creating space for dialogue and understanding and advocating legislation to end the "stop and frisk" practice.
George graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in Media Communication Arts. He still lives in the Norwood neighborhood of The Bronx and works as Docketing Specialist for a prestigious New York law firm. He is an active board member of several community groups including the Bronx Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Concerned Citizens for Change, Northwest Bronx Indivisible and Bronx Progressives.
